01 / OVERVIEW

Research overview

Photoluminescent liquid crystals combine molecular ordering with light emission. Our research focuses on fluorinated donor–π–acceptor (D–π–A) tolane and bistolane mesogens designed to exhibit both liquid-crystalline behavior and photoluminescence.

We investigate changes in emission wavelength and intensity associated with transitions among crystalline, liquid-crystalline, and isotropic states. The effects of flexible-chain length, fluorine substitution, dimeric architectures, and terminal groups are examined in the context of thermally responsive optical materials.
